Stories of our designs
Kugelbecher and Spulen
We associate weddings with organ pipes and stained-glass church windows - the designs Kugelbecher and Spulen mirror this association - the perfect wedding gift - which can only be topped by the personalization with the couple's intertwined initials. This duo is also an imaginative gift to celebrate life together or for a wedding anniversary. The spherical shape Kugel represents eternity. Carl Rotter designed the Kugelbecher and had it patented in 1929. Today, the unique so-called spherical-drilling technique is still used for grinding each Kugel. Numerous other engraving techniques were developed and new cuts created. The classic Kugelbecher has become the studio's trademark design.
Margarete
Carl Rotter surprised his wife on their wedding anniversary with a new design and named it after her: Margarete symbolizes the different phases of a relationship - the composition of various different engraving techniques. For no other design are more grinding stones required. The deep wide curve of the snail depicts the “difficult rough times”. The tender spiral represents diligent patience. Egraving both the spiral and the snail, one must not let go, restart or deviate. Ah, so it is in life! Upon turning the glass to look "back" through the clarity of the present, those hurdles suddenly seem very small.
Mycado and Reis
The studio’s dreamteam: Glass engraver Matthias Schrön inserted a new grinding stone onto his grinding machine to manually profile the stone to “get used to the work” it is meant to do. He positioned the cuts closer to each other than usual, and voila Reis was born. His colleague Sascha Bilgenroth took up the idea. By extending the cuts and slimming them a bit his answer is Mycado. The big challenge for the glasscutter us to attain regularity in the irregularity.
Aufsteiger and Dancing Fish
A fish seldom swims alone. Every Dancing Fish numbers approximately 60 individual unique fish. One person sees 2 fish kissing, another person sees 1 fish swimming against the crowd, to each his own. Harmony and conventionalism are both important. The Aufsteiger exudes energy - it is bubbling in all directions and puts you in a good mood. We love the combination Aufsteiger and Dancing Fish.
Kegel
Invisible, but perceptible: run your finger up and down one of the satin or clear elements to feel the smooth curved texture. The surprise is that the eye sees the curves moving left to right, and to the touch the curves move up and down. The Kegel is unassuming at first, but absolutely unique!
